Police Qualification Process

While going into the police academy is an exciting time for anyone with the desire
of seeking such a career; It can also be a road filled with great obstacles unlike most other career paths. Anyone going into the police academy should consider the requirements carefully before taking the steps necessary to become a police officer or getting into a law enforcement career. There are many requirements.



Age Requirement:

For officer positions, you must have reached your 21st birthday prior to, or by the date of your police appointment.

Physical Condition:

Applicants usually submit to a physical examination by a licensed physician. The physician must certify that they are physically sound, and free from any defects, or illnesses which may adversely affect the performance of a peace officer. Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20, and there must be no hearing defects. Blood type must be submitted prior to date of appointment.

Background Investigation:

A thorough background investigation will be conducted on all applicants. This will look for evidence of good moral character and reputation, which is mandatory.

Other General Requirements A Police Applicant May Not Have:

Conviction for any felony offense.

Conviction for any misdemeanor offense, other than minor traffic infraction.

Conviction for driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs within the last 10yrs.

Being on probation for any criminal offense.

Conviction of any moral turpitude.

Being under indictment for, or awaiting trial for any criminal offense.

Having an unfavorable record of traffic convictions or collisions.

Having any history of drug or alcohol abuse.

Any revocation of your peace officer's license by your state.

Any history of poor credit or not meeting your financial obligations.

Any military discharge under less than honorable condition.

Any admission or confession to any felony offense.

Membership or association with any subversive or extremist organization.

Any false statement of fact, fraud, or deception in your application.
